Dustin Jacobus is an illustrator and industrial design engineer, who is deeply passionate about nature, sustainable design, biomimicry, and futurism. Through his art, he explores the question: What would a world look like if we cared for all lifeforms? In his imaginative work, he envisions a future where we live in harmony with nature.
“In this idyllic future, humans and nature coexist harmoniously,” he says. “Inspired by the ingenuity of cellular growth, scientific breakthroughs in nanotechnology have given us a new programmable, carbon-based material. This remarkable material allows us to organically “grow” urban structures like living plants. A vast sensory network, mimicking a fungal web or nervous system, pulses through our cities, connecting them seamlessly to the biosphere and fostering continuous adaptation. Gone are the days of sprawling, disconnected settlements. Now, we flourish within the “Urban Reef,” an interconnected living network that binds humanity and nature. This ever-evolving metropolis provides a flourishing home not just for us, but for all Earth’s creatures.
He has worked for more than a decade as a freelance technical illustrator for a diversity of clients. He developed the art project Universitas, wherein a fictional character explores 7 futuristic, utopian civilizations. Jacobus has explored the Solarpunk genre for the last 5 years which resulted in a broad range of art projects and publications. On a regular basis he gives keynote speeches and workshops in which he discusses and presents his view on the future.

Dustin Jacobus is illustrator en ingenieur Industrial Design, met een diepe passie voor de natuur, duurzaam ontwerp, biomimicry en futurisme. Via zijn kunst onderzoekt hij de vraag: hoe zou de wereld eruit zien als we voor alle levensvormen zouden zorgen? In zijn fantasierijke werk stelt hij een toekomst voor waarin we in harmonie met de natuur leven.
“In deze idyllische toekomst bestaan mens en natuur harmonieus naast elkaar,” aldus Jacobus. “Geïnspireerd door de vindingrijkheid van cellulaire groei hebben wetenschappelijke doorbraken in de nanotechnologie ons een nieuw programmeerbaar, op koolstof gebaseerd materiaal opgeleverd. Dit opmerkelijke materiaal stelt ons in staat om op organische wijze stedelijke structuren zoals levende planten te laten ‘groeien’. Een enorm sensorisch netwerk, dat een schimmelweb of zenuwstelsel nabootst, pulseert door onze steden, verbindt ze naadloos met de biosfeer en bevordert voortdurende aanpassing. Voorbij zijn de dagen van uitgestrekte, losgekoppelde nederzettingen. Nu floreren we binnen het ‘Urban Reef’, een onderling verbonden levend netwerk dat de mensheid en de natuur met elkaar verbindt. Deze steeds evoluerende metropool biedt niet alleen een bloeiend thuis voor ons, maar voor alle wezens op aarde.”
Hij werkt al ruim tien jaar als freelance technisch illustrator voor uiteenlopende opdrachtgevers. Hij ontwikkelde het kunstproject Universitas, waarin een fictief personage zeven futuristische, utopische beschavingen verkent. Jacobus heeft de afgelopen 5 jaar het Solarpunk-genre verkend, wat resulteerde in een breed scala aan kunstprojecten en publicaties. Regelmatig geeft hij keynote speeches en workshops waarin hij zijn visie op de toekomst bespreekt en presenteert.
