Robin Rozendal is a fantasy writer and illustrator, in addition to her work as a videographer and photographer. Verloren Aluria is the first book in her ‘Living Cities’ series (in Dutch). She also draws her own covers and illustrations, made illustrations for magazines several times and illustrated the children’s book Luguberg: talentenjacht, by Dianne Arentsen.
About this work she says: “This artwork is a drawing of the living city ‘Faly’, one of the characters of my book series ‘Living cities’. Living cities are creatures with thoughts and feelings and very often they also have mental health issues. Pretty scary, living in a city with anxiety. In Faly’s case, after years of neglect and loneliness she’s lost touch with reality, and doesn’t know which way to grow anymore. You can see her befuddlement in the way she grows towers in all shapes and sizes, gnome-size to giant size, everywhere and anywhere.
I drew this in Photoshop, planning to use it as the cover art for the first book in the series. The drawing took me about 80 hours to make, but in the end I thought it didn’t work well as cover art. Too busy, too much details. So I started again and made another artwork for the cover. This one with the stairs I still liked a lot, which I why I really liked the chance to publish it in this magazine.”

Robin Rozendal is schrijver en illustrator van fantasyboeken, naast haar werk als videomaker en fotograaf. Verloren Aluria is het eerste boek in haar serie ‘Levende Steden’. Daarnaast tekent ze haar eigen omslagen en illustraties, maakte ze meermaals de omslagillustratie voor Vonk Magazine en illustreerde ze het kinderboek Luguberg: talentenjacht van Dianne Arentsen.
Over dit werk zegt ze: “Deze illustratie is een tekening van de levende stad ‘Faly’, een van de personages uit mijn boekenreeks ‘Levende steden’. Levende steden zijn wezens met gedachten en gevoelens en heel vaak hebben ze ook geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen. Best eng, leven in een stad met angst. In het geval van Faly is ze na jaren van verwaarlozing en eenzaamheid het contact met de realiteit kwijtgeraakt en weet ze niet meer welke kant ze op moet groeien. Je kunt haar verwarring zien aan de manier waarop ze torens in alle soorten en maten laat groeien, van kabouterformaat tot gigantisch formaat, overal en nergens.
Ik heb dit in Photoshop gemaakt en was van plan het te gebruiken als omslag voor het eerste boek in de serie. Het maken van de tekening kostte me ongeveer 80 uur, maar uiteindelijk vond ik dat het niet zo goed zou werken als cover. Te druk, te veel details. Dus begon ik opnieuw en maakte nog een artwork voor de omslag. Deze met de trap vond ik nog steeds erg leuk, en daarom vond ik het fantastisch om hem in dit magazine te publiceren.”
