“This sea turtle is badly in the market for a bigger shell.”

“My first attempt at a 3D model of a sea turtle turned out to be unintentionally out of proportion as I was critiqued during my portfolio presentation in art school in 2018. “The flippers look like croissants to me,” the art director of my favorite game company commented.”
Cathy Eppinga is a Dutch fantasy artist who finds herself at home in all sorts of creative media. Storytelling and world-building are recurring themes in her work, which she explores through drawing, writing and 3D modeling. She works as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, and she is writing the manuscript of her debut novel, Halfmer. This comment of the art director only made her more determined to get where she wants to be:
“Nervously laughing at their remark, I felt my chance for an internship slip through my fingers. I applied for the job position, sending the improved model along with this illustration of this sea turtle that is badly in the market of a bigger shell. My “dealing with feedback and growth potential” earned me the internship. I often find that my favorite projects come from these kinds of unexpected situations. And finally: sea turtles are my favorite animals.”

“Deze zeeschildpad is dringend op zoek naar een groter schild.”

“Mijn eerste poging tot een 3D-model van een zeeschildpad bleek onbedoeld buiten proportie. Dat ontdekte ik toen ik in 2018 kritiek kreeg tijdens mijn portfoliopresentatie op de kunstacademie. ‘De flippers zien eruit als croissants,’ aldus de art director van mijn favoriete gamebedrijf.”
Cathy Eppinga is een Nederlandse fantasykunstenaar die zich thuis voelt in allerlei creatieve media. Verhalen vertellen en wereldopbouw zijn terugkerende thema’s in haar werk, die ze onderzoekt door middel van tekenen, schrijven en 3D-modelleren. Ze werkt als freelance grafisch ontwerper en illustrator en schrijft het manuscript van haar debuutroman Halfmer. De opmerking van de art director maakte haar alleen maar vastberadener om te komen waar ze wil zijn:
“Nerveus lachend om zijn opmerking voelde ik mijn kans op een stage door mijn vingers glippen. Ik solliciteerde naar de functie en stuurde het verbeterde model samen met de illustratie van deze zeeschildpad die dringend op zoek is naar een groter schild. Mijn ‘omgaan met feedback en groeipotentieel’ leverde mij de stage op. Mijn favoriete projecten komen vaak voort uit dit soort onverwachte situaties. En tot slot: zeeschildpadden zijn mijn lievelingsdieren.”
