“One evening, I was on the balcony with Harlan, and he pointed at the moon overhead. It’s strange how we all got used so quickly to its new appearance, with green and brown areas.”

“Do I write science fiction? Fantasy? Horror? Magic realism? Social satire? Surrealism? Well yes, and no. Actually what I do is pick from each genre the elements I can use and turn them into something uniquely mine. My late friend Eddy C. Bertin used to say that my work is a blend of genres, all in constant cross-pollination. I like that description. I even coined a name for that unique style of mine: frankrogerism.
My story “The Florist’s Shop” is a case in point. It starts out as a science fiction story, with strange events unfolding on the moon. But then it veers off into something closer to surrealism. There’s nothing scientific about the story, although it may seem that way. I feel no need to stick genre labels onto my stories, but I don’t mind seeing them identified as typical cases of frankrogerism.”

Frank Roger was born in 1957 in Ghent, Belgium. His first story appeared in 1975. By now he has a few hundred short stories to his credit, published in more than 40 languages. Apart from fiction, he also produces collages and visual art in a surrealist and satirical tradition.

Maar dan gaat het over naar iets wat dichter bij het surrealisme ligt. Er is niets wetenschappelijks aan het verhaal, ook al lijkt dat misschien wel zo. Ik heb geen behoefte om genrelabels op mijn verhalen te plakken, maar ik vind het niet erg om ze te zien als typische gevallen van frankrogerisme.”
