“I started out loving science fiction before I could read the novels.“

Tais Teng contributed a story ánd artwork for our new magazine. He tells us why: “I started out loving science fiction before I could read the novels. There wasn’t much Dutch science fiction, only some translated Asimov and Bradbury but there was an enormous secondhand bookstore in my city with a whole wall filled with American science fiction. Talking about Aladdin’s treasure cave…

I used to gaze at the covers, filled with a pure yearning wonder and had to make up my own stories about them.

When I turned twelve I couldn’t stand it anymore. I bought one with a spaceship on the cover: Defiance by Kenneth Bulmer. As you can see it had all a boy of twelve needs: a strange alien landscape, a star-filled sky, a spaceship which has serious problems otherwise her cannons wouldn’t be firing…

I next sat down with a English-Dutch dictionary and three months later I could read English. I then decided that I would become a sf writer who could also draw such wonderfully strange covers for his own novels.

Well, I did.”

“Ik hield al van sciencefiction voordat ik kon lezen.”

Tais Teng heeft een verhaal én artwork bijgedragen voor ons nieuwe magazine. Hij vertelt ons waarom: “Ik hield al van sciencefiction voordat ik kon lezen. Er was niet veel Nederlandse sciencefiction in onze boekwinkel, slechts enkele vertaalde Asimovs en Bradburys, maar er was wel een enorme tweedehandsboekwinkel in mijn stad met een hele wand vol Amerikaanse sciencefiction. Over de schatten van Aladdin gesproken…

Ik staarde naar de omslagen, vervuld van een puur verwonderd verlangen en moest gewoon mijn eigen verhalen verzinnen.

Toen ik twaalf werd, kon ik er niet meer tegen. Ik kocht er eentje met een ruimteschip op de cover: Defiance van Kenneth Bulmer. Zoals je kunt zien had het alles wat een jongen van twaalf nodig had: een vreemd buitenaards landschap, een sterrenhemel, een ruimteschip dat ernstige problemen heeft, anders zouden zijn kanonnen niet afgevuurd worden…

Vervolgens ging ik aan de slag met een Engels-Nederlands woordenboek en drie maanden later kon ik het Engels lezen. Vanaf toen wist ik dat ik sciencefictionschrijver zou worden die ook zulke wonderlijk vreemde covers voor zijn eigen romans zou tekenen.

Aldus geschiedde.”
