Mike Jansen tells us about his story:
“The term ‘eudaimonia’ derives from Greek and translates as ‘in good spirit’ in the sense of ‘being ok with something’. The story was written for a contest in 2016 called ‘De mens in 2050’ (humanity in 2050). In it I’ve tried to combine an extrapolation of current research into stem cell techniques, gene-editing, terraforming, genetic drift and many more areas into a tale of two friends who each in their own way try to achieve their ultimate potential, either through self modification (in line with the transhumanist ideals) or (eu)genetic optimization for future generations. It is their relation, friendship and co-operation that helps them achieve their goals and provide them their eudaimonia.
It is typical of my work that I try to combine many aspects of technical, socio-economic and cultural developments as major or minor plot points to give the reader a sense of scope and broadness that is much wider than the actual story itself, even in very short stories. In effect, I try to make the world a story in itself that provides not only a backdrop to the story, but also its own narrative in parallel to the actual story. It is a technique that works well for me and keeps my work interesting to read and re-read, not only for my readers, but also for myself.”

Mike Jansen vertelt ons over zijn verhaal:
“De term ‘eudaimonia’ komt uit het Grieks en kan vertaald worden als ‘in goeden doen’ in de zin van ‘ergens berusting in vinden’. Het verhaal is geschreven voor een wedstrijd uit 2016 met als thema ‘De mens in 2050’. Daarin heb ik geprobeerd een extrapolatie van huidig onderzoek naar stamceltechnieken, genbewerking, terraforming, genetische drift en nog veel meer gebieden te combineren tot een verhaal van twee vriendinnen die elk op hun eigen manier hun ultieme potentieel proberen te bereiken door zelfmodificatie (in lijn met de transhumanistische idealen) of (eu)genetische optimalisatie voor toekomstige generaties. Het is hun relatie, vriendschap en samenwerking die hen helpt hun doelen en hun eudaimonia te bereiken.
Typerend voor mijn werk is dat ik veel aspecten van technische, sociaaleconomische en culturele ontwikkelingen probeer te combineren in grote of kleine plotpunten. Dit doe ik om de lezer een gevoel van ruimte te geven dat veel breder is dan het eigenlijke verhaal zelf, zelfs in heel korte verhalen. In feite probeer ik van de wereld een verhaal op zichzelf te maken dat niet alleen als achtergrond dient, maar ook een eigen zeggenschap heeft, parallel aan het eigenlijke verhaal. Het is een techniek die voor mij goed werkt en mijn werk interessant houdt om te lezen en te herlezen, niet alleen voor mijn lezers, maar ook voor mezelf.”
