A couple of months ago the team of Fantasize sent me a message with a question: “Can you create a magazine in just about… 2 months?”
Of course, that was a challenge. But what is life without a challenge? So, I decided to roll with it. But first things first, a cover was needed. An important part of your magazine since the first thing people see is the outside.

The theme for this glossy is Erasmuscon. Based on that information, I had to come up with a plan. For Erasmuscon, the most prominent figures on the poster and flyers are a time traveler on his unicorn and a bunch of tentacles. Over the course of time, the time traveler got a backstory. After some pondering, it was decided that these three had to be on the cover, but what would be an interesting composition?
To figure that out, I started with thinking about different compositions and sketching them. Some of those sketches are just some very simple shapes (sometimes not even recognizable for the outside viewer), but for the artist it is very clear. Most of the time.

The time traveler is a bit of a doofus. His job is to gather intel from all kinds of time periods and archiving them. But he also loves to read the stories and intel he gathers. Together with his unicorn, he travels through time and does his job. But, he might be followed by a monster that loves to gather information as well… by stealing it from the time traveler. This setting gave me the first spark I needed for the final design.

After the first rough sketch, I like to flesh the sketch out more. There are multiple ways to do this, but I like to draw some important parts a bit bigger. Especially characters. But, of course, an eye needs to be kept out for the whole cover, including the image, but also the title and other information.

The plan has been put on the paper, which guides me to the next step: going big or going home with sketching the final piece! In some cases, you just need more than one pencil sketch to improve yourself and the artwork.

And then, it is time for the most exciting and terrifying thing at the same time: inking. I decided to go with traditional materials, due to the fact I tend to be faster with it and the feeling of pen and ink gliding over the paper is just irreplaceable. To be safe, I scanned in the piece with just the outer lines. Might my ink have spilled or if there would have been a stubborn glass of water, I wouldn’t have to start all over again.

After inking everything, a bit of digital magic was needed to make sure the cover was not too bright. Of course, an important goal of a cover is showing what the magazine is about, so the title and other information was added digitally as well. That’s something that goes way faster digitally. After receiving feedback, changing things around, the final result arrived. And here it is:

Een paar maanden geleden stuurde het team van Fantasize mij een bericht met de vraag: “Kun jij in ongeveer… 2 maanden een tijdschrift maken?” Natuurlijk was dat een uitdaging. Maar wat is het leven zonder uitdaging? Dus besloot ik ermee aan de slag te gaan. Maar eerst en vooral was er een cover nodig. Een belangrijk onderdeel van je magazine, aangezien het eerste wat mensen zien de buitenkant is.

Het thema voor deze glossy is Erasmuscon. Op basis van die informatie moest ik een plan bedenken. Voor Erasmuscon zijn de prominentste figuren op de poster en flyers een tijdreiziger op zijn eenhoorn en een stel tentakels. Na verloop van de tijd kreeg de tijdreiziger een achtergrondverhaal. Na enig nadenken besloten we dat deze drie wel op de cover moesten, maar wat zou een interessante compositie zijn?
Om dat uit te zoeken, begon ik na te denken over verschillende composities en deze te schetsen. Sommige van die schetsen zijn slechts enkele heel eenvoudige vormen, soms alleen maar herkenbaar voor mij. Meestal.

De tijdreiziger is een beetje een sukkel. Het is zijn taak om informatie uit allerlei tijdsperioden te verzamelen en deze te archiveren. Maar hij leest ook graag de verhalen en informatie die hij verzamelt. Samen met zijn eenhoorn reist hij door de tijd en doet hij zijn werk. Maar misschien wordt hij gevolgd door een monster dat ook graag informatie verzamelt… door deze van de tijdreiziger te stelen. Deze setting gaf mij de eerste vonk die ik nodig had voor het uiteindelijke ontwerp.

Na de eerste ruwe schets werkte ik deze verder uit. Er zijn meerdere manieren om dit te doen, maar ik vind het leuk om belangrijke onderdelen wat groter te tekenen. Vooral personages. Maar uiteraard moet de hele cover in het oog worden gehouden, inclusief de afbeelding, maar ook de titel en andere informatie.

Het ontwerp staat op papier en dat helpt mij naar de volgende stap: groots aanpakken of het bijltje (potloodje) erbij neergooien bij het schetsen van het laatste stuk! In sommige gevallen heb je meer dan één potloodschets nodig om jezelf en het kunstwerk te verbeteren.

En dan is het tijd voor het opwindendste en angstaanjagendste tegelijk: de boel in de inkt zetten. Ik heb besloten om voor traditionele materialen te gaan, omdat ik er sneller mee werk en omdat ik het gevoel van pen en inkt die over het papier glijden gewoon onvervangbaar vind. Voor de zekerheid heb ik het stuk met alleen de buitenste lijnen ingescand. Mocht mijn inkt vlekken of mocht er een glas water overheen vallen, dan hoef ik niet helemaal opnieuw te beginnen.

Nadat alles met inkt was ingekleurd, was er een beetje digitale magie nodig om ervoor te zorgen dat de omslag niet te fel werd. Een belangrijk doel van een cover is natuurlijk om te laten zien waar het magazine over gaat, daarom werd de titel en andere informatie ook digitaal toegevoegd. Dat gaat op die manier veel sneller. Na het ontvangen van feedback en het veranderen van zaken, kwamen we uit op bovenstaand resultaat.
