“Cuddles is a horror story and the joke is: I don’t like horror stories at all! They contain too much blood for me or are too intense. So why have I written a horror story?
That is how it turned out.
This story is based on a nightmare I once had (the bath with lights comes straight out of it) and it stuck with me. I knew I had to turn it into a story one day, where I could write down those gruesome details. The story is less gruesome than the dream, but the dream ended well. You can discover for yourself whether the story has a happy ending or not.”
Sigrid Lensink-Damen works with language all day long. If not for translation work, then for editing stories and articles at Fantasize, where she is editor-in-chief. She also regularly writes articles, stories and blogs for various media, she forms the board of the Fantastische Unie together with Isabelle Plomteux and she still finds time to learn Korean and Spanish with DuoLingo and to improve her Russian. With her eldest son she has developed their own language: Ilirean.

“Knuffels is een horrorverhaal en de grap is: ik hou helemaal niet van horrorverhalen! Ze zijn me vaak te bloederig of te intens. Dus waarom heb ik dan een horrorverhaal geschreven?
Dat pakte zo uit.
Dit verhaal is gebaseerd op een nachtmerrie die ik ooit had (het bad met lichtjes komt daar rechtstreeks uit) en het is me bijgebleven. Ik wist dat ik er ooit een verhaal van wilde maken, waarin ik die gruwelijke details van me kon afschrijven. Het verhaal is trouwens minder gruwelijk dan de droom, maar de droom liep dan weer goed af. Of het verhaal ook een happy end heeft, kun je zelf ontdekken.”
Sigrid Lensink-Damen is de hele dag met taal bezig. Is het niet voor vertaalwerk, dan is het wel voor het redigeren van verhalen en artikelen bij Fantasize, waar ze eindredacteur is. Ook schrijft ze zelf regelmatig artikelen, verhalen en blogs voor diverse media, vormt ze samen met Isabelle Plomteux het bestuur van de Fantastische Unie en vindt ze ergens nog tijd om met DuoLingo Koreaans en Spaans te leren en haar Russisch op te halen. Met haar oudste zoon heeft ze een eigen taal ontwikkeld: het Ilireaans.
