Pam Hage: “My piece was created for a contest a couple of years ago. The theme was “art avatar”: how do you see yourself as the ultimate, even godlike, artist? I wasn’t quite sure what that meant for me, but I thought that as long as my entry contained stars, feathers, painterly brush strokes, and an overdose of purples, people would know I made it. I’ve used Photoshop to make this, but I use a style that is reminiscent of a traditional oil painting. My entry made it to the finals, so something about this idea and execution must have clicked with the judges!

The night sky has always fascinated me. I even wanted to study astronomy, but its sheer amount of mathematics drove me to earth sciences instead (which involves a lot, but doable amount of mathematics). The character’s weapon of choice, a needle, was chosen on purpose; I like to sew. I even recreated this character as a cosplay for events like Elfia or Castlefest. It made me think about the artwork more and more. Why is the character restoring the night sky? Is light pollution threatening the stars, or is something far more sinister going on? It inspired me to write a novel. The main character might not look as flamboyant as the one in the artwork, but they share a common drive to protect the stars. This artwork truly bridges all my creative hobbies, making it my favourite piece.”

Pam Hage: “Mijn stuk is een paar jaar geleden gemaakt voor een wedstrijd. Het thema was ‘kunstavatar’: hoe zie je jezelf als de ultieme, zelfs goddelijke, kunstenaar? Ik wist niet precies wat dat voor mij betekende, maar ik dacht dat zolang mijn inzending sterren, veren, schilderachtige penseelstreken en een overdosis paars bevatte, men wel wist dat het van mij kwam. Ik heb Photoshop gebruikt om dit te maken, maar ik gebruik een stijl die doet denken aan een traditioneel olieverfschilderij. Mijn inzending haalde de finale, dus iets aan dit idee en de uitvoering moet bij de juryleden in de smaak gevallen zijn!

De nachtelijke hemel heeft mij altijd gefascineerd. Ik wilde zelfs sterrenkunde studeren, maar de enorme hoeveelheid wiskunde deed me in plaats daarvan besluiten aardwetenschappen te kiezen (waar ook veel, maar een haalbare hoeveelheid wiskunde aan te pas komt). Het favoriete wapen van het personage, een naald, werd met opzet gekozen: ik hou van naaien. Ik heb dit personage zelfs opnieuw gemaakt als cosplay voor evenementen als Elfia of Castlefest. Het zette mij steeds meer aan het denken over het kunstwerk. Waarom herstelt het personage de nachtelijke hemel? Bedreigt lichtvervuiling de sterren, of is er iets veel sinisters aan de hand? Het inspireerde mij om een roman te schrijven. De hoofdpersoon ziet er misschien niet zo flamboyant uit als die in het kunstwerk, maar ze delen een gemeenschappelijke drang om de sterren te beschermen. Dit kunstwerk overbrugt echt al mijn creatieve hobby’s, waardoor het mijn favoriete stuk is.”
